History of
Rancho Santa Fe

Rancho Santa Fe is one of the most exclusive and affluent zip codes in Southern California. But it didn’t start out that way! In 1906 the Santa Fe Railway bought the area with intentions of farming eucalyptus trees that would be used for railroad ties. The land was absolutely perfect. With great fertile soil and its prime location settled right in between the ocean and the mountains. Later it was deemed that the bark from the trees would not be an appropriate use of material for the railroad ties. To this day, there are still 3 million eucalyptus trees in the area! By 1921 Santa Fe had filed a subdivision map that outlined land parcels, and a Civic Center. The Civic Center, which is now referred to as “The Village” consisted of a schoolhouse, offices, food mart, and the famous Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Fast-forward 100 years later, Rancho Santa Fe is home to some of the most sought-after and luxury real estate and mansions in the country. With the ocean just 5 miles away from the west side of the city it is no wonder we have become one of the best areas to live in Southern California.
